Dear Patient,

Thank you for sharing this question. I understand your concern and I will try to answer your question.

Acne usually occur adolescence and are mostly resolved with time. It is caused by drying up of oil on your skin which blocks the small pores and causes accumulation of oil and wastes in your skin in the form of pimples.

You will need to change your lifestyle to avoid damage while your acne are present. You must avoid sunlight as much as possible, and try not to pick on your pimples because that will further damage your skin.

For initial treatment, please get a cream with Benzoyl Peroxide (usually comes under the name of Brevoxyl or PanOxyl). It is an Over The Counter drug. So you can easily get it. It comes as a cream, gel and face wash. The concentration ranges from 2.5 to 10. You should start with 2.5 and can later increase the dose.It works by increasing the turnover of your skin and has avoids plugging of skin pores.

The instructions vary for different forms. But I will give you the instructions for the cream. Wash your skin and then apply to affected areas, massage gently into skin for 10 to 20 seconds and work into a lather, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips and mouth! Avoid exposure to sunlight! It may bleach your hair and clothes, so use precaution. If your acne dont respond to Benzoyl Peroxide within a month then you should consult a dermatologist for further treatment.

Side effects of the drug include irritation, redness, itching etc. They usually resolve within a month. However if you get severe irritation or redness you should immediately consult a dermatologist !!

If you have any further queries, you can contact me on my email address. I will be happy to answer them.
Good Luck. Wishing you a healthy life.
