Pasty Stools, Vomiting, Cough. On Syrup For Rehydration. What Is Wrong?

My baby is four months old and he was born at 32 weeks according to USG and he was 2.33 Kg when he was born. Now, after 4 months, his weight is 6Kg. However, since last three days, he has been having motions ( Stool looks like paste (Not waterish)), also he vomits immediately after taking bottle feed. He is now having cough also. I support he is vomiting because of cough But, he is active. Doctor has given him one syrup for rehydration, one syrup for motions control, antibiotics to conrtol the bacteria. Still, his condition is not improved. I am worried as to whether a baby can have motions for three to four days? Can some one help me with my query?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Your child is having gastroenteritis.

Continue medication as advised by your Pediatrician.

The mainstay of treatment is to maintain hydration by giving sips oral rehydration fluids like Pedialyte, probiotics to restore the gut flora, and to treat infection with the antibiotic if required.

Loose motions will take time to get controlled and usually 3 to 5 days.

If motions are continuing beyond 5 days, stool to be given for routine, culture, and for reducing substances after consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Hi
Thanks for your query.
Your baby is having acute gastroenteritis which could be viral or bacterial in nature and takes 4 to 5 days to settle.
Vomiting could be post tussive or due to infection.
Continue with oral rehydration solution sip by sip after each loose stool.
I suggest you to give him breast feeding and in case you give bottle feed proper sterilization of bottle is needed.
Give lactobaccilus for 2 to 3 days .
In case of vomiting antiemetic like domperidone is to be given as per dosage.
Watch for features of dehydration like lethargy/decreased urine output/refusal of feeds and in case you observe any get him re evaluated by pediatrician.

Wishing your baby good health
God bless..
