Pancreatitis, Jaundiced, Abdominal And Back Pain, Appetite, Diarrhea. Treatment?

I had acute pancreatitis. I became jaundiced and had severe abdomen and back pain. The biopsy was negative. They put a stent into the pancreas. I no longer have abdomen or back pain. I have an appetite. But I still suffer from diarrhea. My lab test indicated my pancreatic enzymes are normal. It has been three months since I first got sick. Will the diarrhea go away in time?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about all that you have been through recently especially with your pancreas, abdominal pains, jaundice and now the persistent diarrhea.

From the information you have provided, I am afraid you may have pancreatic insufficiency which is a possible complication after acute pancreatitis. The pancreas produces enzymes that are very important in digestion and without these enzymes, food cannot be well digested and absorbed resulting in a chronic diarrhea. Normal pancreatic enzymes are not the least helpful in making this diagnosis.

My approach would be to investigate you properly for this possibility while at the same time eliminating common cause of diarrhea like food intolerance, infections, etc. A detailed questioning physical exam, stool exam and specific tests depending on the initial findings. Consult a gastroenterooglist and get evaluated.

THis diarrhea may take long if not investigated and treated. If the cause is identified, then treatment options would be proposed to you. It should take less than a week to correct pancreatic insufficiency with enzymes orally.

I wish you well and hope this answer addresses your query fully and provides you with ample information to act on. Thank you for using our services and feel free to request for more information.
