Pain During Sex. Using Lubricants. Any Alternatives?

My husband and I do not have sex anymore because it is too painful for me. He is 72 and I am 54. Can this cause pain in his groin? It is only on one side and is not always there. We have not had sex for about 2 mos. I have told him to masturbate, but he says that it "just doesn't do anything for him" and that he is unable to do it. It is very frustrating for him, not to mention painful. I feel guilty and sorry for him, but no matter what we do, it hurts me. I am on hormone replacement and we use plenty of lubrication. Is there anything he can do about it or should he be worried that something is wrong medically?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Most common cause in your age may be due to dryness of vagina in the postmenopausal state, though you didn't mention about menopause state. In this case, estrogen cream application is helpful along with long foreplay.
Other cause in your age may be infections, problems in cervix, uterus or ovaries. So, get an ultrasound of your pelvis to exclude other pathology.

Seek the opinion of gynecologist also.

Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It seems that due to menopause there is a decreasing female hormone giving rise to dryness in vagina due to atrophy of normal vaginal membrane giving rise to this problem.
Use of estrogen cream will be helpful for your problem.
Consult your gynecologist and take advice.

Problem with your husband of having pain in the groin during sex might be due to having inguinal hernia, direct or indirect. Consult a surgeon and get examined.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
