Nose Surgery Blocked, Permanently Blocked. Taken Otrivin. Possible Placements?

Hi, I need to know how to replace a daily regime of otrivin efficiently. I had a nose surgery in 2008 and since then my nose is permanently blocked. I was told to use otrivin to unblock it. The problem is, I have been using it daily for since last 1 year , 4 times a day. I know it is harmful to do so, but I really can't breathe without it. Without it I can't function either. I tried a few things, such as boiling water once but nothing is as effective as otrivin. Please advise on the possible replacements.

Hello,
Using otrivin daily is no treatment.
You must stop using it.
You have to replace it by Oral decongestant and antihistaminic for few days and nasal steroid sprays and nasal saline wash daily .
Consult your ENT specialist.
Then we can stop the nasal steroid sprays after 3-4 months and then continue with nasal saline wash for long time which is harmless.
Use of otrivin is harmful for nose and should not be used daily for more than 10 days continously.

ENT Specialist Dr. Vaishali Mehta's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

I presume you had a septal surgery to correct the deviated portion of your nose from your history. If the nose block is persisting following the surgery, it needs to be looked into. A detailed exam of the nose with CT of the nose and sinuses will help us to know why the block is persistent. It could be due to persistent deviation/ block in your sinuses. So kindly get an ENT Consult for the same.

Regarding the nose drops, you have to stop using Otrivin as soon as possible. It causes rebound congestion and is harmful if used for prolonged periods. Try using saline nasal drops, till you visit your doctor. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further doubts.

Wish you good health,
Dr Vaishali Mehta
