I have nonstop itching, burning, biting in vaginal area. Initially treated for yeast infection, then 3 was later the itching started again, more intense. No yeast was found but given Difucan again. Last visit to urgent care, given Bactrim for bacteria in urine. Still extreme itching and burning. It's beginning to affect me at work. I'll be going to another dr tomorrow but afraid the problem won't be solved. I'm not sexually active and 49 yrs old. Help,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

It is but obvious you are suffering from an infection, mostly of bacterial origin. The proof for this is the presence of bacteria in the urine. But what your doctor should be doing in cases of failed therapy, is to conduct a urine culture and sensitivity examination.

The advantages of this investigation are that it reports the infection-causing organism (to confirm whether it is bacterial, viral, fungal, etc.), and once this is confirmed; if bacterial, a number of antibiotics are tested against your urine sample and the response is noted. This will then report the most suitable antibiotic that can be used, which will guarantee a response and rapid recovery.

I would thus advise you to request your doctor for the above mentioned investigation, which would ensure complete relief from your symptoms. Also, please consume plenty of water, and also request for a urine alkalizer (which will help in relieving your symptoms.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications at: http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-shoaib-khan/64581 . I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
