MRI Of Breasts Showed Aortic Aneurysm, Possible Enlarged Lymph Nodes Near The Heart. History Of Heart Disease And Breast Cancer In Family. Concerning?

My Dr just phoned and said an MRI of my breasts indicated I may have an aortic aneurysm and may have enlarged lymph nodes near the heart. I have has no symptoms except I do not have the energy I think I should have at 66. He is going to set up a CT scan with contrast of the chest. Both of my parents died of heart disease and I have had 2 sisters and an aunt with breast cancer. Should I be frightened?

Dear patient,

Thanks for the question. I don't think you should necessarily panic; many people have aneurysms of the aorta that can either remain stable or grow slowly. The main worry is rupture, and the main determinant is the size and location of the aneurysm, which will be clarified by the CT. Depending on the size and location, your doctor may recommend blood pressure control and serial follow up over the years versus surgery. Worrisome symptoms would be fainting spells, visual disturbances, sudden shortness of breath and tearing chest pain which would prompt emergent evaluation.

Yours truly,
