Hello,

Alternate constipation and diarrhea may indicate colonic cancer particularly at the age of 76 years of age.

He is at present being treated as infective diarrhea. Antibiotic coverage is indicated and needs to be continued.

Ciprofloxacin (500 mg bid for 3–5 d) with Metronidazole (250 mg qid for 7 d) are usually advised. However, he should be investigated further with colonoscopy on follow-up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
