Is Yasmin Safe For Health?

I am 40 years old and healthy and my doctor just prescribed the birth control pill Yasmin because I am having terrible periods, mood swings, etc. She said it was safe but I am so scared now after looking online and seeing about blood clots and DVT. Is this pill relatively safe?

Hello,

Yasmin and oral contraceptives are safe medications. There is an increased risk of blood clots though. The risk of blood clot is thought to be less than the risk of someone was pregnant, so the risk is not extremely high.

The estimated risk is less than a 1% chance of developing a blood clot if you took the pill for ten years.

In general, it is very common practice to use oral contraceptive pills to help with heavy periods and mood swings. Many women use birth control for these reasons.

I hope you are reassured as Yasmin is a safe medication to take and can help your quality of life greatly.

If you are still concerned though, there are other medications that can help as well (ibuprofen or nuva ring or IUD or drop for bleeding and sertraline for mood swings).

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong
