Is Victoza Linked To Cancer?

I saw an ad put on TV by so lawyers that said Victoza is linked to cancer. I have been taking Victoza for over a year. I called my Dr. to ask what to do but he is on vacation and the head nurse was no help.

Should I stop taking Victoza and get with my Dr. as soon as he returns from vacation?

Thanks,

Greg

Hi, I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.

Victoza (liraglutide [rDNA origin] injection) is an injectable prescription medicine that may improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes when used along with diet and exercise.

There is very small fraction of thyroid cancers, that too at very high doses. So, you need not worry much. You can discuss this with your treating doctor when he is back.

Do not use Victoza if you or any of your family members have a history of MTC(medullary thyroid cancer) or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

While taking Victoza, tell your doctor if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. These may be symptoms of thyroid cancer.

Hope this guides you. Thank you.
