Is This Normal Of Brown Colour Discharge With Change In Medication?

I have recently begun taking TriNessa. I am a little over three weeks into the pack. I was a few hours late in taking my pill this past Friday, then Saturday I started getting what appeared to be my period but is either a black or dark brown in color. The pain is far worse than any period I have experienced. Is this normal with the change in medication?

Hi,

In general, we do expect abnormal spotting and bleeding in the first 3 months of starting a new birth control. Some people are so sensitive to hormone changes that even taking an oral contraceptive pill an hour early or late can cause some breakthrough bleeding.

Since you just started your birth control 3 weeks ago, it is perfectly normal to have some cramping and abnormal bleeding (even black or dark brown in color). You could try taking ibuprofen 800mg three times a day as that can help decrease cramping and bleeding. Your bleeding and cramping should improve in the next few months.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
