Hallow Dear,

I would have appreciated had you mentioned the period of your gestation. However, I infer from your history, it is under 6 weeks.

Up to 9 weeks of pregnancy, it can very safely and successfully be terminated by medicines: Tab. Mifepristone and Tab. Misoprostol. As you have been rightly informed, the completeness of the abortion should be confirmed by ultrasonography. If the medicines have failed or if the abortion has been incomplete, it can be completed by surgical evacuation of the uterine cavity. These medicines cause developmental abnormalities in the baby; hence if they fail to terminate the pregnancy, it should not be continued.

Surgical methods of abortion are suction evacuation, MVA aspiration or Dilatation and evacuation. The methods are preferred as per the duration of pregnancy. Under 6 weeks of pregnancy, MVA aspiration is a very good method. However, I feel, you should opt for Medical method first. They are very successful. Just for the sake of 2-4% failure possibility, there is no necessity of straight a way opting for surgical methods. Surgical methods have more complication rate than medical methods. The complications include bleeding, infection and trauma to the genital organs which may cause recurrent abortions in future.

I hope this empowers you in deciding about the method of termination of pregnancy.
