Is There Any Medication For Cystitis?

My sister (a slim, healthy 72 year-old) suffers from cystitis only about once a year - given antibiotics and this has always cleared it up. However over the last 6 months this has reoccurred. Her urine sample shows ‘mixed growth’ and she is asked to send in repeat urine samples to be checked. As symptoms not very severe (suffers low back-ache and takes painkillers/cranberry juice/drinks water regularly etc) she isn’t given medication. Is there anything else you could recommend?

Urologist 's  Response
hi, she should take cranberry extract tablets instead, which deliver fixed dose of the extract. if more than 3-4 infection episodes in a year, she will need prophylactic (preventive, low dose) antibiotics usually for 6 months or so. treat her constipation if any. consult a urologist if things dont improve, a sonography or further tests may find an underlying cause. take care.
