Is There Any Connection Between Pregnancy And Onset Of Hyperthyroidism Or Goiter?
In April, my boyfriend and I had a contraceptive accident on ovulation day. In May, I had what I believe to be a miscarriage but because it was so early I didn't go to the doctor. A few weeks later I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and began experiencing a progression of symptoms. I was now diagnosed with a goiter. Is there a connection between pregnancy and an onset of hyperthyroidism? or goiter? or are they not connected? Please help...
Hello, I have gone carefully through your concern and understood your query. The most common cause if hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid (in young ages) is Graves' disease that has an autoimmune origin. The onset of disease is boosted by the stress. So probably you have been under a stressful situation after the miscarriage and that has boosted hyperthyrodisim. During pregnancy the thyroid volume is increased but in your case Graves' disease may be the cause of the goiter. I would recommend to treat the hyeprthyroidism properly during pregnancy because it may cause damages to the fetus.
