Is There Any Alternate For Glycomet Medicine Which Doesn T Cause Constipation?

Dear Doctor, I am suffering from PCOS and was taking OCP along with Glycomet for a while. I am now off OCP and cannot take Glycomet now as it causes me chronic constipation. I am also overweight. When i am taking Glycomet (2 Grams a day) it helps control my insulin resistance and I was losing weight. Now I have stopped taking it and my weight is increasing. Is there any alternative to Glycomet which does not cause constipation?

Hi and welcome to HCM. Metformin(Glycomet) is a medication actually used to treat type 2 diabetes. This drug affects the action of insulin and is useful in reducing a number of the symptoms and complications of PCOS. Metformin has been shown to be useful in the management of irregular periods, ovulation induction, weight loss. Obesity that occurs with PCOS needs to be treated because it can cause numerous additional medical problems. The management of obesity in PCOS is similar to the management of obesity in general. Weight loss can help reduce or prevent many of the complications associated with PCOS. Take Metformin with food as this will help reduce the stomach discomfort. Metformin is very important and most commonly used drug in PCOS. U should not have stopped this without your doctor consultation. Please consult your doctor. Regards. Dr Santosh
