Is Talking To Oneself Suggestive Of Impaired Mental Balance?

Hi Doctor, My sister is divorced and working in a small firm. We have for the past one year or so been noticing that she talks to herself a lot...very loudly and animatedly...in her room, in the kitchen, bathroom. ..almost everywhere. I met a colleague of hers who told me that she does it in the office too. I am very worried ..is she losing her mental balance? Regards,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

There are some persons who, when excited about an event , project , activity etc may talk to themselves while in this excited state.
This is usually for a very short period of time.

If she is continually talking to herself non stop or is exhibiting any other changes in her behavior that you or other members of your family consider alarming, then she needs to be assessed.

This initial assessment can be done by her general doctor or a psychiatrist.

I hope this helps
