Is Taking Acyclovir Safe For Cold Sores In Mouth?

Hello. I have an outbreak of cold sores on my mouth. I have been taking some acyclovir that the date of expiration is a few years old. I have requested from my DR a new prescription. Is it safe to continue with the old prescription? How long will it take to heal the sores I have now that are four days old?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand..

As per your complain cold sores is a viral infection caused by Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and it is a self limiting and recurring infection..
In case if your medication is at the date of expiration you need a new prescription and although can continue taking Acyclovir oral as well as topical but avoid expired products..
You can also apply topical antivirals over the lesions like Valtrex [Valacyclovir]..
The cold sores commonly resolve within a period of 2 week or even less..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
