Is Surgery Required For Mild Disc Bulge At The L5/S1 Level?

Hi, I ve had a CT scan showing a mild generalised disk bulge at the L5/S1 level, causing thecal sac compression and extending into the right sided neural foraman, posterior displacement of the traversing right S1 nerve root, two small linear bony densities which lie in close proximity to the existing right L5 nerve root. Is surgery unavoidable to fix this?

Hello,

The need of surgery is based on the presenting symptoms with recovery to conservative treatment and concerns of the patient for functional point of view. The primary care with assisted physiotherapy, postural adaptations, weight control (if obese) and later surgery is last resort when no improvement or deterioration with development of neurologic signs of nerve compression involving lower limbs. If you can provide me further details of your symptoms and current therapeutic strategy, I would be in a better position to guide in this instance. At last, I wold quote that the surgery is not hard and fast in your case.
