Is Surgery Required For An Umbilical Hernia?

I have a small dime sized umbilical hernia. I have seen a surgeon who thinks i should have an operation to seal up the hole with a mesh filler. I have no discomfort. My belly button does protude a bit more than it used to and I can push the fatty tissue back into the opening with my finger without any pain. Another doctor told me it was not a concern and to do nothing. Question: Do i have surgery? And if I don t what are the chances this will get worse?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Unfortunately, no one can predict what will happen in the future. But, I think you should consider the opinion of the surgeon: to have it surgically repaired. That's the only solution for adults.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
