Hello,
I have gone through your query and understood the concern. Your symptoms can be mostly due to the hormone effect. The depo shot contains high hormone dose and this can lead to symptoms which can mimic a very early pregnancy. The spotting is likely to be due to the breakthrough, again a side effect of the contraceptive. If these symptoms persist, you should see a specialist for a proper clinical appraisal and also exclude a remotely possible pregnancy. A sonogram of the pelvis, preferably trans-vaginal, can help you assess the state of the pelvic organs. Hope this helps.

Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

Pregnancy symptoms can vary widely between women and the symptoms that we commonly associate with pregnancy like breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, cravings, and spotting can also occur due the hormones in birth control, especially the shot because it has a higher dose of hormones than the every day birth control pill.

The DEPO shot is nearly 100% effective in preventing pregnancy, so you do not have to worry about it failing. The only way you could be pregnant right now is it you were already pregnant when you got the shot. If you did a pregnancy test when you got the shot, than you do not have anything to worry about.

The shot does cause a small amount of weight gain, most women will put on an average of 5 pounds per year. The spotting usually goes away eventually, but it can last even up to 6 months.

If you never did a pregnancy test before you got the shot and you were sexually active without using contraception immediately before the injection, it may be worth checking a urine pregnancy test just in case.

Otherwise, you really do not have to worry about pregnancy and your symptoms are most likely a side effect of the DEPO.

I hope i was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
