Is Severe Vomiting And Diarrhea In A Child A Cause For Concern?

My daughter is seven years old, she has vomited 8 times, within 4 hours and it is every thirty minutes in that period. She has had one bout of diarrhea. There is no fever, no stomach pain but she can not keep water down at all. She is lethargic and very pale. Should I bring her to the ER or Urgent care? Thank you Meghan L

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain vomiting and diarrhea in your child cn occur due to causes like bacterial infection, food poisoning, Viral Gastroenteritis, Parasitic infestation, electrolyte imbalances, side effects of medication etc..
I would suggest you to consult a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Stool culture, blood test can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..
You can be advised fluid replacement therapy by giving her plenty of oral rehydration salts..
You can also her a semisolid diet and give more of banana, yoghurt and rice, cereals etc..
In case if there is bacterial infection antibiotics can be given..
Antiparasitic medication can be given like Albendazole for parasitic infection..
Ondensarton can be advised to control vomiting and Loperamide for loose motions..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
