Is Pregnancy Possible When Sperm Count Is Low?

What are chances of pregnancy with sperm count of 2.6 million and 40% motility and healthy female with all clear of age 39/40 never previously conceived. Recent Sperm count came up with zero sperm - could this be a glitch? consultant told husband he should go to another consultant and would need to have invasive operation to get sperm out....Should he get a second opinion? Would IVF be only option and what are the chances?

Hi,
I understand your concern.
- At least 15-20 millions of sperm count is needed for normal conception.
- With The count & motility you are mentioning, IUI can be tried with selection of normal/healthy sperms.
- The discrepancy in recent sperm count may be due to examination within 1-3 days of intercourse. Let him have another report after 3 days of abstinence.IF that too has same -ve result- he has to undergo investigations to find the cause.( Production/conduction defect)
- If there is no husband sperm available ,stii a healthy woman can conceive by- Artificial insemination/Intrauterine insemination of semen from a semen bank/unknown doner.
_ IVF is the method used for defect in both male& female ( tubal block) partners.
Thanks.
