Is It Safe To Use Antibiotics Continuously For Three Months?

our daughter was diagnosed with Acute sinusitis the doctor prescribed 500 doses @ 125Mg of Amoxicillin-POT Clavulanate to be taken orally over the next three months, plus Nasonex 50 MCG/ACT Nasal Suspension. My question if for the Antibiotic, three months seems to be a long period to be on an antibiotic for a Mucoid retention cyst.

Brief Answer:
After using the Amoxicillin-POT Clavulanate for two weeks, you should see the otorhinolaringologist again.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM.
Eventhough amoxicillin with or without clavulanate is the first-line therapy in acute sinusitis, it is usually prescribed for 5-10 days. If the symptoms persist after 2 courses of antibiotic therapy, than you should see an otolaryngologist.
The long-term use of antibiotics may develop antibiotic-resistance, inability of the antibiotic to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria. This is a serious side effect. It may cause yeast buildup in the gut which can lead to diarrhoea.
So after undergoing two courses of Amoxicillin-POT Clavulanate, i would suggest you to see again the otolaryngologist.
Another possible treatment choice may be the drainage of the involved sinus surgically, followed by a short term use of antibiotics.

Hope this is helpful.
