Is It Safe To Take Tdap Again?

My son had Tdap 6/30/2008. His college said he needed tetnus shot. He went to the doctors today and they gave him Tdap again. First one was given by pediatrician. He is twenty two and went to internist who gave him it again. This will not harm him?

Hi,

Tdap is actually one of the most frequently given vaccines as it is recommended at least every 10 years. Women also get this vaccine during pregnancy and fathers also can get it. For expecting parents, the Tdap is used to prevent pertussis, which can be dangerous to newborns. Tdap is also used frequently if a person has a cut that may be contaminated with tetanus.

Tdap is very safe and there are minimal side effects. Side effects are mostly site injection pain and stiffness. The vaccine would protect your son from getting whooping cough (pertussis) and tetanus. We generally vaccinate patients at 21 years of age as their last Tdap was given at age 11. If you have further concerns about the vaccine, the internist should be able to help you and answer your questions as well.
