Is It Safe To Give Zyrtec For Cough?
Doctor, my son aged 5 and half years old is had cough about one month back when I gave him Mucum syrup and it got subsided (consumption 1 bottle in a week). 2 - 3 weeks later he started coughing once a while in day or night time and when I found the cough increased, I again started mucum (one bottle in a week) and in night time zrytech. After a week when it did not subsided, I consulted doctor who examined and said whize is hardly there. Most probbably it is alergic cough and prescribed prospan, butalin and zyrtec equivalent. I have started using prospan and did not give butalin. And instead of Aerius, I am using same zyrtec. Now it is fourth day with this medicines and there is no improvement instead is having more cough dry in nature. But when he cough and vomit, it is bit sticky. Please advise

Cough and cold are viral 95% of the times in children. For cold you can use anti-allergics like cetirizine and for nose block, saline nasal decongestants will do. Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose every 4-6th hourly, that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.
For cold you can use (Zyrtec) Cetrizine at 0.25mg/kg/dose every 12 hourly for 3 days.
For nasal block, plain saline nasal drops will do, every 4-6th hourly to relive nasal congestion.

A short course of bronchodilators (syrup asthalin/inhaler levolin with spacer) is quiet safe .
If cough prsists or becomes worse ,it will be wise to see a doctor to figure out the cause and proper treatment.
Cough associated with viral ilnesses or non allergic irritent cough any way will settle without any medication in few days (7-8)days.
