Is It Safe To Change From Bactrim To Macrobid For UTI?

UTI - I took 800 mg of bactrim for new UTI, but now doc has me changing to macrobid. Do I have to wait to take the macrobid or can I take it immediately? I don t want to call back doctor on a Sunday, and I am leaving for out of state tomorrow. Thanks.

Hi,

There is no harm in such switching over of antibiotics for the treatment of UTI.

It seems that Bactrim did not work well to eradicate your infection hence your doctor advised you to take Macrobid. Macrobid can be taken after stopping the Bactrim.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
