Is It Possible For HIV To Have Been Dormant For 16 Years?

Had unprotected sex with a woman probably 16 years ago and have had no problems until the last 3 weeks and I was diagnosed with Herpes Simplex. Have severe pain in the lymph nodes (groin area) and in the back of my hips, painful unrination and have recently developed night sweats after i was prescribed Acyclovir 800mg. Is it possible for HIV to have been dorment for 16 years?? Never had any of these problems before and this has me worried. Have only been sexual active with my wife for the last 15 years. I am stumped.

Welcome to healthcare magic! Genital herpes is due to herpes simplex virus 2 and there are known evidence of asymptomatic carriers of herpes virus.So you should get adequate treatment for Herpes. HIV might remain dormant for 16 years and when immunity goes down manifest as AIDS.Why are you worried about HIV infection? It may not be HIV infection, but just hepres genitalis.In case of doubt, get HIV test done.
