Is It Normal To Have Constipation And Pain In Rectum After A Hip Replacement Surgery?

I had total hip replacement surgery on 3/18/14. Since the surgery I ve been constipated but I m taking stool softeners. When I have the urge to have a movement I feel tension and a feeling on the right side of my rectum as if something is trying to block the movement. Although I finally have the movement and the stool is soft, it still feels uncomfortable on the right side of my rectum. Is this normal after this type of surgery?

Hi,

I noted the history of total hip replacement on 3/18/2014. Since then you are constipated, taking stool softeners, feel tension and feeling on right side of rectum as if something trying to block the movement on urge to pass bm, wants to know whether this is normal after total hip surgery.

No, this is not normal after total hip surgery. It is possible that there might be one one the following reasons:

Actual problem in the rectum like mass or so. pelvic pathology Inadvertent trauma in the pelvic region during surgery. This can be diagnosed by:

> Per-rectal digital examination.
> Anoproctoscopy followed by colonoscopy.
> MRI if the prosthesis can allow or CT scan/ high resolution ultrasonography of the pelvis.

All these things will give the probable diagnosis for planning a proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
