Is Increasing Amount Of Blood In Stools Concerning?

Hello, I'm a 25yr old female. I dont have insurance. But recently i have been noticing when i have a bowel movement there has been an increasing amount of blood in the bowl. I was taking Iron supplements but they were making me too constipated which i think may have been the reason of the increased amount. Am I am right or may i have something else umpleasant?

Hello,

The very first thing is to confirm the presence of blood in stool is to run fecal occult blood test. You can buy one home test and run at home.

Next, sometimes the use of iron supplements can give a false presence of blood in stool. The occult blood test will confirm this. Being constipated will cause stool to harden. This will make it hard to empty your bowels. This is associated with laceration of rectal mucosa leading to blood in stool.

Get it checked by gastroenterologist and run colonoscopy and occult blood test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
