Is Hospitalization Required In Case Of Fetal Death?

my wife told me she lost her baby saturday. She was around her 7th month. She came home and was feeling tired no surgery or nothing. I talk with my dad and he said that usually when you are that far along you would be hospitalized for about 3 days because you can pass the baby. Is this true?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

If a woman comes into the hospital in labor and delivers the baby without any complications, even if it is dead, there is no reason why she would not be able to leave the hospital in one day. However, she would have needed to be there at least for 6-12 hours and there would be some kind of discharge paperwork given to her to take home.

It is also possible that your father may be misinformed- for one, a long time ago they might have kept women in the hospital longer after childbirth with a stillborn, and secondly, in some women they just find out the baby is dead and then labor needs to be induced, which can take some time, especially if the woman has not given birth before.

Anyway I hope you can clarify with your wife what exactly happened in the hospital and her delivery, but it is possible she was not admitted for longer than 24 hours.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
