Is Fluid Discharge And Painful Ear Normal After Myringotomy?

Hi, I m a 51 year old woman who had a myringotomy a week ago. My Dr told me I shouldn t need to use a cotton ball and that I could wear my hearing aid two days after the surgery. Seven days later fluid (clearish yellow) is draining so much I can t wear my aid and there is painful throbbing in my ear. Is this normal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted a history about a 51 year old female who had myringotomy and was told that the ear would be dry enough to be able to ear hearing aid but the fluid is still coming and has pain in ear.
This is always possible but usually the ear is dry within a few days of myringotomy operation that is cut in the ear drum to allow fluid flow outside.
This indicates the possibility of a resolving mastoiditis or resistance of bacterial to the given antibiotics or insufficient medications.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult your Doctor again who operated for evaluation.
CT scan of mastoids to know the condition of the bones.
Change over to another antibiotic.
Additional good anti-inflammatory medicines with painkiller properties.
Antihistamine.
Topical drops for fungus.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
