Is Bilirubin Value Of 24 A Cause For Concern?

My daughter has end stage liver disease. Her bilirubin is 24. She almost died a month ago because she stopped breathing on her own and was paralyzed and incubated. She is still extremely sick...but getting good care at the Liver Institute at Dallas Methodist. Her bilirubin keeps rising. She is mentally confused with hepatic encelapathy. They drained 4 liters off her stomach today. Is there a point when your bilirubin gets so high that you die or go into a coma?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, it is quite possible for someone to go in coma and die at such bilirubin levels. Normally, bilirubin does not cross to brain but at high levels. It crosses blood brain barrier and cause encephalopathy. She needs admission and management in ICU.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,
