Is Autism Caused By Thyroid Deficiencies?

Hi, I am a 46 yr old woman with hypothyroidism which was detected in the 4th month of my pregnancy 6.5 yrs ago and was put on 50 mcg thyronorm.. I was also detected with very low HB of 5 and low B12, 1 yr before my pregnancy ( I was 38 yrs ) I was treated with B12 injections and iron tonic for 3 months.. My sister who is older to me had her child when she was 24 and was also taking treatment for hypothyroidism since her 12th std. Her Son was diagnosed with autism at age of 2.5 and is a classic , severe case (he is 24 and needs 24/7 assistance in US ).. My son too was assessed for autism as he didn t start speaking by age of 3 and was a very mild case with high cognitive skills. He is talking well and plays chess etc now at age of 6. In last 2 years my HB was low again and I ve taken B12 and iron injections. Last month my endocrinologist detected anti TPO 1300 and TSH 10.35 and increased my thryronorm dosage to 75 mcg.. I have many related questions. 1. Is autism caused by thyroid defeciencies or more specifically by the autoimmune disorder causing thyroid deficiencies ? as I have seen many hypothyroid women having normal children. 2. Will my son have a thyroid problem as a heredity factor ..I have not checked on his thyroid functioning as his growth seems ok at 6 . His autistic characteristics are at the minimum with some constant humming and stupendous and irrelevant talking from time to time. Should I get him screened ? 3. we grow and consume vegetables organically and RO water.. does this make a difference with my autoimmune disorder ? 4. Will I get immune to tyronorm in the long term in my old age and how may that affect me.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, here are your number wise explanations to queries
1. The autism is usually caused by developmental defect intrauterine status very early in pregnancy when inner ear structures are being formed, that may be related to your drug intake or thyroid level fluctuation of developing fetus
2. Your son is more likely to have thyroid disorder and the same must be screened with serum levels of free T 3 , T 4 and thyroid stimulating hormone, anti Thyroid peroxidase antibodies titre.
3. Organic vegetables and RO water will not make a difference with autoimmune disorder.
4. There will not be any immunity to Thyronorm medicine as it is an exogenous supplementation to fulfill the underlying deficiency of thyroid hormone only as endogenous release is hampered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
