Is Asthma, Related With Severe Wheezing Cough In Infants?

My five month old son has had a cough for nearly 6 weeks now. It is worse at night and he also becomes wheezy at night time. I took him to dr three weeks ago but they said he was ok but he is now coughing so hard he is bringing up lots of his feeds. Should I go back? Could this be early signs of asthma?

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for your son as follows:

1. There are many possible causes of wheezing in such a young age like viral infections, bronchiolitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), etc.

Hence it is too early to say that your son has got asthma.

2. As he has wheezing and cough at present, of course I would suggest you to get him examined by his doctor who will ask history in detail and listen to his chest with stethoscope and decide possible causes of wheezing.

3. Sometimes for such wheezing, nebulization may also be helpful.

4. If he frequently vomits out feeds, your doctor also may think of GERD. In that case, an antacid also may help.

5. Please avoid exposure to dusts, smokes, fumes, air pollution and cold air as much as possible.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish your son the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
