Is Alcohol Consumption Safe While On Diflucan?

Hi, yesterday about 1pm I took a 100mg tablet of diflucan for a yeast infection. It says not to mix/ consume alcohol with it. We were going to go out for a couple drinks tonight. Around 6pm. Just wondering if it would still effect me? Or could I have a couple beers?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.

It is not safe to consume alcohol or alcohol containing beverages while taking Diflucan.

Diflucan (Fluconazole) can produce the so-called “disulfiram like reaction” when taken along with alcohol.

Disulfiram, or antabuse, is a drug that treats alcoholism by making the person acutely sensitive to alcohol. When he drinks alcohol while there is disulfiram in his system, he experiences very unpleasant symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, high BP, severe nausea, vomiting, throbbing headaches, shortness of breath, mental confusion, skin flushing, & visual impairment.
This is referred to as “disulfiram reaction”

Diflucan is also known to cause or aggravate liver damage, similarly alcohol is also harmful to the liver. Thus, taken together, they can cause more damage to the liver.

So, avoid taking alcohol or alcohol containing beverages as long as you are treated with Diflucan and thereafter also.

Hope this will help you.
A feed back is highly appreciated.
