Is Acute Leukemia Always Treatable?

I have a friend that just found out they have acute Leukemia. He was hospitalized last night due to chemo starting Monday for 7 days. When we got to the hospital he was on oxygen due to problem breathing.I am wondering if acute leukemia is always treatable or only if your body can withstand treatment. We are so worried about him for he is only 44 yrs old and very active in bike riding. This has come on so quick and it seems like it is killing him before they can even start chemo.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM. Thanks for the query.
it is far from always treatable since acute leukemia is very serious maligannt diases with poor prognosis but it depends on type of leukemia and patients general health. In this age,in most cases it can be treated and cured, but 25-30 %of cases are incurable and death occurs within 2-3 years. in every case I am sure doctors will do all they can,he just needs to be patient and strong enough to follow treatment plan.-
Wish you good health. Regards
