Is A Manic Episode Due To The Intake Of Valpro Along With Citalopram When Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder?

Hi , I am 56 years old , I have been on 1200 mg of valpro and 60 mg of citilapram for about 20 years because I was diagnosed with bipolar, even though I had had only one episode of mania , which I believe was brought on by the medication I was given for pts . This episode ruined any chance of me having a life without significant guilt , I done something that I didn t think I could ever do which wrecked my marriage. About a month ago I decided to stop taking valpro because I was feeling depressed and a loss of motivating. I felt better for a couple of weeks , now I am just about bed riden. I am suffering anxiety, severe depression , feeling over whelmed and just sick of living., Could this be because I have stopped taking valpro , if so should I start taking it again ? Please help me. Regards

Hi,

Definitely, these symptoms are due to abrupt stoppage of medicines. Even, if you were feeling symptoms of depression & lack of motivation, you should not have stopped these medicines, without consulting your doctor. Some times, patients of bipolar need repeated evaluation of their symptoms & also their drugs.

Sometimes, the dosage may have to be reduced or increased, some medicine may have to be added or deleted as per the condition of patient. However, this all has to be done under guidance of your doctor. Otherwise also, these drugs are never stopped abruptly, rather the dose may be decreased or increased in a gradual decreasing or increasing fashion to avoid withdrawal symptoms / onset of unwanted new symptoms. You should get yourself re-evaluated by your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
