Is Zantac A Good Alternative Of Nexium And Prilosec?

I have been taking Nexium & Prilosec for years and since hearing about all of the things it can damage in your body I m trying to get off this stuff. I am taking Zantac 150 twice a day but sometimes I need it more often. Doctor says don t. Does Zantac 75 have less stuff (??) in it that maybe I could take it more often. Will Zantac help heal my stomach?

Hi,

We will try to help you in the best way possible. First of all, it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, yes it's good to get off the drugs which belonged to the category of proton pump inhibitors and those may have notorious side effects of bone marrow suppression and bone resorption etc.

Zantac Also functions in the same way but acts by blocking H2 receptors and mechanism of action hence is different. Efficacy is slightly lesser but is effective. Also, drug interactions are lesser than PPIs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
