Is Effient Intake Mandatory While On A Cardiac Stent?

Does a person who have stents need to be on Effient or something similar? My husband had a heart attack and required stents only with no further surgery or complications. He was given Effient for a year and says the doctor told him he doesn t need to be in it any longer. I always thought once you had stents, you should always be on something similar.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Effient(prasugrel) is a medicine used to prevent from forming harmful blood clots in a patient. In this case in a patient that had a heart attack and required stents.
This medicine is used from six to one year usually after the heart attack, because of the high risk of bleeding that has the patient.
It's used for more than one year only in patients that have high risk for blood clotting.
Some of the new guidelines suggest the use of Effient for three months, because of the high risk of bleeding in some patients.
Probably your husband has been using Effiel in combination with acetylsalicylic acid in low dosage.
He has to continue using acetylsalicylic acid in low dosage, which also has the antiagregant effect and protects him from blood clotting.

Hope I have answered your query.
