Is Bupropion Safe To Be Taken While On Cymbalta?

I am 60 years old. I have sjogren s syndrome and i take cymbalta 30 mg twice daily for chronic joint pain. I know it is an antidepressant. However , in the past, before cymbalta, I have taken bupropion150 mg twice daily for depression. I am going through a bout of depression now and i want to know if the 2 drugs are okay to be on at the same time . I have not taken bupropion since i have been on cymbalta. Thanks. KWk

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not safe to take Bupropion while on Cymbalta. Bupropion if taken along with Cymbalta (Duloxetine) may increase the risk of seizures especially in elders. In addition, Bupropion can also increase the blood levels of Cymbalta which may increase its side effects like constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, hypersomnia, insomnia, nausea, sedation, and weakness.

Consult your doctor for effective alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.

Hope these answer your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. A feed back is appreciated.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
