Hypothyroidism Prior To Pregnancy, But Elevated After Child Birth. What Is The Reason ?

I was hypothyroidism prior to pregnancy but on low dose of levothyroxine 25mcg. Since delivering baby,now 19 mths later, my tsh is still elevated. My fam med dr keeps uping my dose to achieve a stable tsh. Now on 100mcg, tsh came back at 5.0. Now dr wanting to up my dose to 125mcg. Any specific reason why my tsh is so abnormal now post delivery??

Hello,
This is not unusual and is  found so many times.
It has been seen that more than 50% of hypothyroid women with Hashimoto's thyroiditis experienced an increase in levothyroxine requirements in the postpartum compared to pregestational doses.
 This pattern of enhanced levothyroxine need is generally due to increase of auto immune destruction of thyroid tissue n the postpartum period.
You must definitely take the revised dose as advised by your doctor and the target of TSH level should be below 3.You may need a further enhancement of dose if level of TSH doesn't drop below 3.
