How To Treat Constipation?

I had my large intestine removed due to a rupture. After 6 months my intestines were reconnected. I was told that I would always have a runny watery stool. But when I go to the doctor they always ask me if I have diarrhea and when I tell them that I was told that I would always have that, it doesn t seem like that is the case. Well right now I feel very constipated. I go to the bathroom but nothing but liquid comes out and a lot of gas. My abdomen feels very bloated that it is ver uncomfortable. Does this mean I may have a small bowel obstruction? Even if I am able to pass gas?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of removal of colon due to a rupture and reconnected after 6 months of initial surgery. Feeling constipated, bloated, only liquids on going for passing motion.
The most probable cause looks to be impacted fecoliths not allowing the bowels to be emptied, hence accumulation of feces and gases giving the picture of pseudo-obstruction.
I would advise you the following:
X-ray of the abdomen in standing position to see for fecoliths and faces and fluid-air levels.
If present to try the evacuation with enema or conventional enema with saline and soap.
Laxatives if the enema works.
Colonoscopy to see for the actual picture.
Barium enema.
To get further treatment as per the results of investigations.
