Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello. Is Actalin okay to take if one has a total thyroidectomy and takes a daily regiment of synthroid (or levothyroxin? How can one get iodine? Is it in a combination or available alone as a prescription or over the counter drug? Over the past 12 months I have lost almost all of my hair and am near bald now (female). Wonder if this has to do with my thyroid condition? Is this a typical side effect?
The Guidelines for Hypothyroidism in Adults released new guidelines in 2012 do not recommend iodine supplementation except in countries known to be deficient then the addition of iodized salt is generally the way populations get needed iodine. More importantly, I would make certain you are taking your medication correctly and not consuming foods that interfere with thyroid functioning such as SOY, GRAPEFRUIT JUICE, FOOD, and a HIGH FIBER DIET. The symptoms you describe are symptoms associated with a poorly functioning thyroid gland. I suggest you take yourself off Actalin, monitor your TSH and dosage of Synthroid closely, avoid the foods above and take your medication 4 hours after food on an empty stomach or first thing in the morning at least one hour before any food at all. Good luck to you!
