Hallow Dear,

Though WHO has recommended Misoprostol (Cytotec) only also as a method for termination of pregnancy up to 9 weeks of gestation, the other regime is Mifepristone + Misoprostol regime.

It is not clear from your query, in what dose did you take Tab. Misoprostol. For Misoprostol only regime, the dose is 800 microgms by vaginal or sublingual route. It should be taken every 3-12 hours up to 3 doses.

The other regime is Tab. Mifepristol 200 mg to be followed by Tab. Misoprostol 800 microgms by vaginal, buccal or sublingual route as single dose. If the pregnancy is not more than 7 weeks, Misoprostol dose may be reduced to 400 microgms.

Usually after consuming last Misoprostol tablet, the abortion starts within 24 hours; however, occasionally it may be delayed up to 7 days. Completeness of abortion can be ascertained by ultrasonography. Urine Pregnancy Test may not be conclusive as it requires more than a week for it to become negative after abortion.

7 days after last dose of Misoprostol, have a follow up visit to Obstetrician.

These medicines are prescription medicines. They should be bought by Obstetrician's prescription and taken under observation by appropriate instructions.

As you have been rightly informed, these medicines have potential of causing developmental abnormalities in the baby. Hence, if they fail, the decision should not be reverted to continuation of pregnancy.

Since you have taken only Cytotec tablet, and that too likely to be only once and in lower dose, and abortion has not been effected, I would advise you now to opt for Mifepristone + Misoprostol regime, which I feel should terminate your pregnancy. Please take these tablets in prescribed dose and according to prescribed schedule. If still it fails, then you have no other choice left than to undergo termination of pregnancy by surgical procedure like MVA aspiration or so.

I would advise you to report to Obstetrician ASAP before it is too late, and get the proper medicines with appropriate instructions.

I hope this helps you.
