Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having excessive burping for over a month now. Over-the-counter medicines are not curing it like in the past. It seems to get worse and worse. Accompanying the excessive burping is chest, shoulder, arm, and back pain on the left side. I also have a lot of reflux. What are some possible diagnoses?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. With reflux and lots of burping for over a month where the over-the-counter medicines have not worked is most probably indicative of GERD that is Gastro-esophageal reflux disease and/or Hiatus hernia along with lax lower esophageal sphincter. This can be diagnosed y an upper GI Endoscopy and barium swallow and meal if required to get an additional information. Ultrasonography of abdomen too is necessary to rule out gall stones an any other pathology. Once diagnosed the treatment is by prescription based medications and are a PPI like Pantoprazole, Domperidone as motility regulator, antacids and any other medications as would be advised by your Doctor. Also control of stress and anxiety are very important. Go for soft bland diet in small frequent meals. Early to bed and in reclining position for sleeping. Avoidance of smoking and alcohol is needed if you do these.
