Hi there,

In terms of diverticular disease, there really isn't a medication that can give you a cure. I see a lot of patients with diverticulitis, and my strongest recommendation is that they increase their fiber intake. Many Westerners have a huge problem with fiber intake, which is one of the contributing factors to this disease. Although the stool softeners may help bit, a natural high fiber diet will decrease the chances of having another diverticular attack. In terms of your gastric problems, I'm assuming you're having reflux or heartburn, and I would try prilosec which is an over the counter medication.

The only real cure for diverticulitis is removal of the affected portion of the colon with surgery. A general or colorectal surgeon usually performs this procedure. I'd recommend you have a colonoscopy whether you plan to have surgery or not, as sometimes diverticulitis can be caused by colon cancer.

I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions.
