How To Control Heavy Bleeding During Periods?

Hello, I am 55 and I am suffering from very heavy periods whereby i cannot go to work because I am flooding. I only get a period every 2 or 3 months now but it never used to be very heavy like it is now. Should I go and see a doctor or will it stop eventually due to my age? Thank you.

Hello and welcome,

I understand your problem and it is common at this age. There are many causes of heavy periods and the commonest ones are fibroids [ non cancerous tumors of the uterus ] and hormonal imbalances. Other conditions are thick uterine lining [ endometrial hyperplasia] and a condition called dysfunctional bleeding where no cause is found.

The treatment depends upon the cause and so an evaluation by a gynecologist is needed. I suggest that you see a doctor and get examined as well as an ultrasound done to determine the cause. It is not advisable to bleed so much as it may lead to anemia of low hemoglobin in blood.

All the above conditions are easily treatable and are very common. So just see your doctor and begin treatment.

Hope this satisfies your query.
