How Long Must Synvisc Shots Be Taken For Knee Pain?

1. How long will synvisc injection last? 2. How often can you have synvisc in your knee 3. What other injection would help with very painful knees at grade 3-4 osteoarthritis 4. How long do someone have to work in a job with long hours on their feet, lifting heavy loads that will cause wear & tear of the knee?

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. Please go through the following points where I have tried to answer all of your queries:
1.)     Synvisc injection is administered once a week (one week apart) for a total of three injections and the effect lasts upto 6 months but is very subjective.
2.)     There is no frequency limitation as such, can be used as much comfortable according to the state of the knee arthritis.
3.)     Synvisc-One is the same formulation as Synvisc. The only difference is that Synvisc-One is provided with one injection, compared to the three injections required for Synvisc. Apart from that, Durolane and Lubrione are similar ones. There is another option available of Corticosteroid injections that provide an anti-inflammatory medication directly to the knee joint.
4.)     The older a person gets, the greater the wear-and-tear. You can’t completely prevent the wear and tear, and apart from how much to do, it is important how to do. The time varies from person to person. Ideally you should not overstress your joints while it is healthy to use these in optimal amounts. Avoid continuous long standing like for more than half an hour and avoid lifting heavy weights that directly impact knee joints. There are things that you can do to help lessen everyday stress on your joints and make it less likely that OA get worse:
•     Maintain your ideal body weight
•     Exercise is the best way to prevent joint problems. It helps to keep joints from getting stiff and keeps muscles strong. It's also an important part of the treatment of arthritis. Try for at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days or as much as your knees and body can handle.
•     Avoid injury to joints- When you exercise, start slowly and work up to your goal. Each time you exercise, take 5 to 10 minutes to warm up with gentle movements and stretches. This helps to prevent injuries to muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons.
•     Think about changing your exercises and activities each day. You will use different parts of your body and help to avoid stressing the same joints every day. Use exercise equipment and protective gear as instructed. Make sure your safety gear is comfortable and fits well.
•     If you have joint pain lasting 1 to 2 hours after activity or exercise, you may have done too much. Rest the joint. Try an ice pack to relieve pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maninder, General & Family Physician
