I am currently 21 weeks pregnant. I smoked marijuana periodically my first trimester to help with excessive nausea. I stopped for a month and could pass a drug test, but last night I took three hits of a blunt to help me get my a good nights rest after having strep and a sinus infection this last weekend. How long will it take for the THC to rid itself from my system? Also what are some ways to help speed up the process?
I understand your concern and will do everything I can to answer your question.
First: try to quit. There is very little research in America but the research from across the world suggests no significant risk of miscarriage, preterm labor or other pregnancy complications from THC use in moms that are otherwise healthy, don't smoke cigarettes or use other illegal drugs. Hopefully, now that it is legal in some states, we will have more research to answer the question more certainly but for now no one is sure that it is safe. Second: Everyone's metabolism is different but usually THC metabolites are cleared from your system and undetectable in 3-5 weeks. There are a number of herbal or electrolyte or metabolic 'cleanses' to speed this process but none of them have been studied in pregnancy and anything that interferes with your electrolytes can be dangerous for the baby. Third: be honest and open with your doctor or midwife. They should be highly encouraging and supportive of efforts to quit and if they are judgmental, find another provider. Child protective services here in NY will almost never intervene because of THC use alone.
Best of luck through the rest of the pregnancy and I hope this was helpful
