I had an abnormal EMG study that showed evidence of a mild chronic left chronic L5 radiculopathy with reinnervation but no features of axonal degeneration. MRI was then ordered showing mild disc bulge at L4-5 with mild facet arthropathy. No canal or foraminal narrowing was seen. At the L5-S1 level there was a broad-based disc protrusion extending from the central region to the left paracentral region which appears to abut the descending left S1 nerve root. It marginates but does not definitely contact the descending right S1 nerve root. No significant canal stenosis or neural foraminal narrowing identified. I have 2 questions. 1. What type of treatment usually follows? 2. Could this cause bowel and urinary problems (extreme urgency and almost not making it to the restroom?)
